Ms. Jiyoon Um focuses her practice on Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) in the field of video codecs and image processing, handling SEP prosecution and analysis, Office Action responses, claim review, appeals and litigation, foreign prosecution, essentiality analysis, and related advisory work.
Drawing on her master\\\'s research in video signal processing, she has built her practice around video compression and image processing technologies. Recognizing the strategic and commercial significance of SEPs early in her career, she has concentrated on this area since the outset of her practice.
Since 2008, she has exclusively managed the video codec SEP portfolio of a global technology company, overseeing prosecution, registration, and standard pool listing. Given that SEPs are prosecuted and maintained across numerous jurisdictions worldwide, she has extensive experience not only in major markets such as the United States, Europe, China, and Japan, but also in a wide range of jurisdictions rarely encountered in routine domestic practice.
Building on her experience in drafting and prosecuting video SEPs, she advises on standard document-based patent analysis, essentiality evaluations, and standard pool management bodies overseas. She has also handled or supervised approximately 50 domestic and over 60 foreign inter partes proceedings and litigations involving video codec SEPs, accumulating broad practical experience spanning both patent prosecution and dispute resolution.
