Mr. Donghwan Shin received a Master’s degree in Engineering through research in the field of neural networks. Prior to becoming a patent attorney, he worked as a research and development engineer for approximately ten years, engaging in the development of multimedia systems and video codec System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions. During his tenure as an engineer, he participated in the hardware and system implementation of various multimedia technologies based on international standards, including MPEG-1, JPEG, MPEG-2, H.263, H.264/AVC, and VC-1. Through these activities, he developed extensive technical expertise in video compression technologies, semiconductor design, and multimedia systems.

After passing the Korean Patent Attorney Examination in 2010, Mr. Shin focused his practice on intellectual property matters relating to information and communication technologies and multimedia systems. His practice includes domestic and international patent prosecution, patent portfolio development, patentability analyses, and validity/infringement investigations. In particular, he has extensive experience in Standard Essential Patent (SEP) matters involving wireless communication and video coding technologies. His representative areas of expertise include 4G LTE, 5G NR, and 6G wireless communication standards, UWB standards, and video coding standards such as H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, H.266/VVC, EVC, and AVS.
Mr. Shin is uniquely positioned as a professional with both hands-on R&D experience and extensive SEP practice. He has substantial expertise in standards analysis, standards-based patent mapping, essentiality evaluations, and SEP portfolio development. Leveraging his deep understanding of international standards and advanced technologies, he provides comprehensive services covering the entire SEP lifecycle, including SEP generation, patent procurement, licensing, and dispute resolution.
