The number of mobile game trademark applications rapidly went up 2.6 times….90% of the mobile game trademark applications were filed by small and medium-sized companies and mid-sized firms.

It was revealed that the number of mobile game-related trademark applications filed last year mainly by small and medium-sized domestic companies jumped 2.6 times compared to three years ago in the middle of dominant international trend of “Pokemon Go.”

A total of 2,400 mobile game trademark applications had been filed for the last four and a half years, from 2012 to June 2016, according to “Current Status on Mobile Game-related Trademark Applications” released by Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) on 21st.

The number of trademark applications had recorded a rapid increase of 2.6 times in just three years from 268 in 2012 to as much as 980 in 2015.

The trademark applications had been filed mostly by small and medium-sized companies. For the same period, small and medium-sized firms made up 70% of the total trademark applications and mid-sized enterprises represented as much as 20% of the entire trademark applications.

This rapid increase has been mainly attributed to the recent developments that the mobile game trademark applications do not require a massive amount of capital and allow an easy access for users and that the advancement and availability of wearable devices, such as smartphones, make it easy for both small and medium-sized companies and mid-sized firms to actively file the trademark applications.

Com2uS topped the list of companies in the number of mobile game-related trademark applications at 69, followed by Wemade Entertainment at 65, ENP Games at 63, Kakao at 54, and Yello Mobile at 51.

Choi Gyu-wan, director of KIPO's Trademark and Design Examination Bureau, said, “As the game industry with its high-value-added nature has a growing impact on stimulating the service sector in the economy, including job creation, the number of trademark applications filed by small and medium-sized companies will also continue to increase along with it.”
